WEEK 1 Empty WEEK 1

Post by Lloydero Mon Jan 21, 2008 9:44 am

The beginning of any sporting season is special. The air is charged with hope, ambition, strategies and above all love and enthusiasm for the game. The kick off for the World Wide Football leagues season was no different.

For beginners, there are two leagues in WWF. League One has Barcelona, Chelsea, Real madrid,Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Man Utd, Inter Milan, Arsenal, AC Milan, Espanyol, Werder Bremen and Tottenham Hotspurs competing for the honours. League Two has Valencia, Newcastle Utd, Ajax, Juventus,
Everton, Athletico Madrid, West Ham Utd, Roma, Marseille, Seville, Middlesbrough and Celtic doing the battle. The top League Two teams have the added incentive of being promoted to League to fight for, where as the danger of relegation looms large for teams who dont do too well in Leage One. Each team will play every other team in their league, home and away. Two games would be played every week.

Pre Season Friendlies
Several friendlies were being arranged to get the teams into shape with managers trying out different combinations with their respective teams. The friendlies, irrespective of their names, were very competitive affairs and several rivalries were already beginning to take shape. The run-ins between Arsenal and Athletico Madrid have become a stuff of the legend since with neither team unable to keep the other on the ground long enough to get the three count.

The Kick-offs

And after a lot of practice and posturing, it finally was time for the actual thing. The schedules and the battle lines were drawn up and the whistle went off.

The action was immense with players channeling all their nervous energy into the game. Nerve wracking draws were played out between some heavyweights, some games were won on the slimmest of margins where as some other games had resouding winners. There were penalties saved. Superstars were taking shape. Sanogo from Werder Bremen and Aguero from Atheltico Madrid were blazing the field having found the back of the net repeatedly during the first week. Not surprisingly the offensive powerhourses helped Werder Bremen come off with all the points in League One and Athletico Madrid, Celtic in League Two.

The teams battled and battled hard. Teams won and lost but were never disgraced. The most remarkable aspect of the league was fair play. The fouls were kept to a minimum. The beautiful game of football was the winner.

What to watch for

Intense action is on the offing in the next week. Several high powered match ups are on schedule. There is a London derby between fancied Chelsea and the Spurs who gave Barca a run for their money in the first week. Bayern Munich hosts AC Milan and Manchester United travel to San Siro in another clash of the titans. League Two leaders Athletico Madrid and Celtic meet in a battle of the undefeateds. All in all a lot of action for the players and the fans alike.

Substitutions

The league organisers had no choice but to replace a couple of team managers who were not responsive enough. The new managers will find themselves in the challenging role of having to take over Newcastle United and Marseille respectively. It will be quite interesting to see how they smoothly they were able to take over the reins when their teams clash with West Ham and Valencia respectively in the forthcoming days
